Working in a team 2
Remember my first post about the teamwork and it’s connection with Jazz? Well forget it, I’ve got a better idea!
BALLET
On 23th of December my wife and I went to a ballet - “The Nutcracker”, unbelievably beautiful and romantic experience, with an amazing music. Young folks around would’ve called it a cool soundtrack ![]()
Somewhere at the end of it, I noticed the synchronous actions of the ballet-dancers, the
orchestra conductor and the orchestra - in ALL cases, those three elements did not seem to pay attention to the others, they were just like one! Every second was taken care of, by everybody! But this was not IT, the passion they were putting into it, made the biggest impression on me! Their smiles, their look, every step showed me how happy they are of doing it, how much they wanted to please the public… I still remember their smiles at the end, they could show with one bow and one smile the whole passion they had, even after 2 hours of continuous hard work! Well, this is the spirit I want to have in my work!!!
In my previous post about the jazz and working in team I wrote about how important it is for a jazz band everyone to pay attention to the other, so their teamwork would become a nice music experience for the public. It is applicable to the small companies, with small teams, but if we are talking about a big company, the best art-related analogy with team work will be the ballet!
There is nothing prettier or influencing to your senses than the ballet-teamwork! (At least for me, I’m still in the mood of it) If we compare the orchestra conductor, the ballet-dancers and the orchestra to the departments in a company, the orchestra conductor is the leader, the orchestra are his helpers, and the ballet-dancers are the actual performers, those who deliver the end product to the client. In the beginning of the performance the conductor shows up - he prepares a little, gives the signal and the orchestra begins playing… it could be compared to the moment when the leader (manager) goes to his financial advisors and they prepare the marketing strategy. When they are ready, here the ballet-dancers come to the scene, they are the people who have the most of the customer’s attention, they pass on the purpose and meaning of the product, it’s value. The end result? People like me, so impressed of their performance, they write posts in their blogs about it! This, of course, happens when the team turns their work into an art! And what do you think, will I visit an opera again? You’re right, I WILL!
As a conclusion, I will post a link to a short video, and will leave to you to judge how much the teamwork can be compared to a ballet! Notice the smiles, which are like permanent on their faces - we should all learn from that, and the next time we try to sell something to a client, let’s do it with a smile!
